Faster, more reliable internet is on the way to rural Rotorua and Taupō — and for many households, it’ll be completely free to connect.

As part of the 2025 Chorus Fibre Network Extension, fibre broadband is being rolled out to more rural communities across the Bay of Plenty and Waikato. That includes a significant number of areas in both the Rotorua Lakes District and Taupō District.

If you’ve been putting up with patchy speeds, unreliable connections, or satellite lag — now’s the time to upgrade.

New Fibre Areas in Rural Rotorua

Chorus is currently building fibre in the following Rotorua communities:

  • Awahou

  • Hamurana

  • Lake Rotomā

  • Mourea

  • Ngongotahā

  • Otaramarae

  • Rotoiti

  • Rotomā

  • Te Ngae

  • Unsworth Road (Hamurana)

If you live in one of these areas and your home or driveway is within 200 metres of the new fibre route, you’re eligible for a free fibre connection.

 

Fibre Expansion in the Taupō District

It’s not just Rotorua getting the upgrade. Fibre is also being extended into these Taupō communities:

  • Waitahanui

  • Whakamaru

These rural areas will benefit from the same fibre performance that city users enjoy — think faster streaming, smoother Zoom calls, and better connectivity for everyone in the household.
