How fast is ADSL copper broadband?

We've been building lots of new Rural Wireless sites recently and most customers are coming across from ADSL copper broadband.
ADSL is the most common type of rural broadband that you can get over an old school copper line and they are delivered from roadside cabinets (like the one pictured above). VDSL is the other type, which while much faster, relies on your house being fairly close to the roadside cabinet (typically less than 1.5km) as the signals degrade quite quickly over distance.
So how fast is it? Well, while the theoretical maximum is 24Mbps, it turns out the average download speed is 8.5Mbps according to the latest Commerce Commission Winter 2020 broadband report which you can read here.
You can check your current speed by going to www.speedtest.net and pressing "Go" to run a speedtest.
