Omanawa Rural Broadband Project 2019
Residents may have noticed contractors working on the road reserve along Omanawa Road during the past month. Chorus is currently extending their fibre network to the broadband cabinet located at the corner of Omanawa Road and Peers Road. Once this project is complette, residents will be able to connect to unlimited data ADSL, VDSL & Fibre broadband services. New services are expected to go live in April.
About the upgraded broadband cabinet and new broadband services
Significantly improved ADSL service will become available. The key difference between the very slow ADSL service that has existed in the area for years is with the local broadband cabinet, which will be running the latest generation Nokia ADSL equipment (known as an ISAM), supporting ADSL2+. And rather than sharing very limited capacity back to Tauranga, the ISAM will be connected to fibre broadband with effectively infinite backhaul capacity (any time the ISAM gets close to using all its capacity, it's a straightforward process for Chorus to upgrade the fibre link. Chorus is committed to running a congestion-free network).
Service will be available at the following addresses:
443 - 1331 OMANAWA ROAD
417 - 918 MCLAREN FALLS ROAD
OMANAWA FALLS ROAD
FAWN LODGE LANE
SARONA PARK DRIVE
Using your existing copper line, VDSL enables a high-speed connection between your property and the upgraded broadband cabinet, corner Peers Road & Omanawa Road. The broadband cabinet is running minimum 1Gbps capacity back to Tauranga, so the speed you'll get will depend on your distance to the upgraded broadband cabinet. Typically around 30Mbps for properties 1-2km from the cabinet, all the way up to 120Mbps for properties closer to the cabinet.
Subject to final testing, service is expected to be available at the following addresses:
651 - 1031 OMANAWA ROAD
2 - 219 PEERS ROAD
28 - 66 TOMSETT ROAD
Fibre is being run from the SH along Omanawa Road to the corner of Omanawa Road and Peers Road. We have the ability to connect customers to this new fibre but unfortunately, no subsidy is available to cover installation costs. If you're happy to cover the install cost, we can provide a quote and arrange for this work to be done.
We also have the ability to extend fibre from the broadband cabinet to your property. Cost is between $10k-$50k per KM depending on what work our civil team need to do. It may be possible to reduce the cost to the individual property depending on the number of neighbours signing up for the service.
You may contact us for a quote for either fibre options.
Our pricing for ADSL/VDSL is $85/month for unlimited data. It includes the latest Huawei HG635 modem/router, which can connect to all three technologies (ADSL2+, VDSL & Fibre).
For Omanawa customers, we've waived standard install fees for orders placed with us before 30 April, 2019.
If your copper line is not in-tact, you may require either a Chorus technician or a Full Flavour technician to do some extra wiring work. Our standard ADSL/VDSL master splitter install charge is $150.
