Voice over LTE (VoLTE) F.A.Q.
Switch on VoLTE so you can make phone calls using the new rural 4G coverage
As part of the RBI2 project 400 new mobile & broadband towers across New Zealand are being built. These new towers work across all three mobile networks (2degrees, Spark and Vodafone) and are aimed at plugging existing coverage gaps.
The majority of these towers are 4G-only and come enabled with a new technology called VoLTE which allows customers to make phone calls over the 4G network.
While you should be able to start using the 4G data straight away, your phone may need it's software updated and a setting turned on in order to make phone calls using VoLTE. Some older phone models don't support VoLTE at all so you may need to consider buying a newer handset to take advantage of the improved reception for phone calls.
Switching on VoLTE doesn't cost you anything extra, doesn't use your mobile plan data and in addition to being able to access the improved coverage for phone calls, you can use 4G data at the same time as making a VoLTE call.
Check out the F.A.Q.s below to get started.
